The Title Page of the Book of Mormon reads thus:
THE
BOOK OF MORMON:AN ACCOUNT WRITTEN BY THE HAND OF MOR-
MON, UPON PLATES TAKEN FROM
THE PLATES OF NEPHI.
There are those who say the biggest error with the Book of Mormon (and therefore proof it was wrriten by Joseph Smith) is its title – “The Book of Mormon.” They say, if it was about God, God’s name would have been in the title.
There are untranslated Nephite words all throughout the Book of Mormon, just as there are untranslated words throughout the Bible, and “Mormon” is one of them.
“Mormon,” as it appears in the title refers to its Nephite meaning, while the subtitle refers to the man who wrote it. To Nephites, the word “Mormon” was known for being the place where people turned to God:
Here are the waters of Mormon, and now as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God and to be called His people…to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things and in all places that ye may be in even until death… (Mosiah 18:8-9)
There already was a book within the Book of Mormon called the “Book of Mormon:”
And now I, Mormon, make a record of the things which I have both seen and heard, and call it the Book of Mormon. (Mormon 1:1)
Thus, the translated title reads:
The Book of Choosing God:
by the Hand of Mormon.
The criticism against the title of the Book of Mormon is unfounded; the translation powerful!
